A commonly-held belief over the last few weeks is that the Lions received a playoff bid automatically after beating DeWitt. I made the mistake of taking this statement as truth and reporting it without finding out for certain first.
The fact is that the Lions still might NOT make the playoffs.
To wit:
If the Lions lose on Thursday, they will finish the season with a 4-3 conference record.
If Star City beats Dollarway, both of those teams also will be 4-3.
Warren is first and Dumas is second regardless of what happens this week. That leaves two open spots and in this scenario, three teams tied for third place.
The way that three-way ties are broken is by going to a point system that provides a maximum of 13 points per conference win, i.e. if you beat a team by 13 or more, you get 13 points. Less than that and you get however many points that you won by.
The team in the three-way tie that has the FEWEST points is eliminated, and from there, seeding is determined head-to-head.
At the moment, Dollarway has 50 points, the most of these three teams regardless of what happens this week.
Star City has 36.
Hamburg has 40.
If Hamburg loses to Dumas, it will finish with 40 points. If Dollarway loses to Star City, it will finish with 50.
If Star City beats Dollarway by more than four points, it would leave Hamburg with the fewest points of these teams and therefore eliminiated from playoff contention. Seeding would go head-to-head and because SC will have beaten Dollarway, it would get the three seed with D-Way at fourth.
It might seem a bit unlikely that this scenario could unfold, but it's not out of the realm of possibility and I thought that people would want to know.
Also the best that HHS can finish is fourth in the conference, win or lose, so that means a long trip in the first round of the playoffs.
